We hosted another international visit this week as the Ambassador of Kazakhstan, Erlan Idrissov, visited Leeds to explore opportunities for cooperation between Kazakhstan and Yorkshire.
Mr Idrissov was welcomed to the Civic Hall by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Eileen Taylor, where he met with businesses working in television and film, an area that the Ambassador had expressed a particular interest in.
During his trip to Leeds, Mr Idrissov also visited the University of Leeds’ Nexus innovation centre and met with Kazakh students who are studying at the university.
Commenting on his visit in an interview with the Business Desk, Mr. Idrissov said: “Kazakhstan and the UK have been strong partners for more than 25 years. I’m honoured to visit the county today and hope this will open up new opportunities for co-operation between Leeds and Kazakhstan.
“I’ve been impressed to learn that Leeds is the UK’s second financial centre after London……I’ve been able to meet members of the business community here and we discussed a number of ideas within their different sectors. I hope Kazakhstan, Leeds and Yorkshire can be open to each other.”
Tom Riordan, chief executive at Leeds City Council, said: “We are both honoured and delighted to be welcoming the ambassador of Kazakhstan, His Excellency Mr Erlan Idrissov, to Leeds Civic Hall as part of his visit to the city.
“Also joining us at this special civic reception hosted by the Lord Mayor, were representatives from local and regional businesses.
“This provided the ambassador with a great opportunity to find out more about the many flourishing business sectors in Leeds and across our region.”
Kazakhstan, officially known as the Republic of Kazakhstan, is the largest country by area in Central Asia and ninth largest in the world. The UK is among Kazakhstan’s ten largest trading partners with mutual trade amounting in £1 billion on 2018.
