Last week saw the visit of a delegation from Bucharest, headed by the Romanian Ambassador to the UK, Mr Dan Mihalache, to mark Romanian National Day and the 100 year anniversary of the Great Union Day.
On 1st December, Romanians celebrate the Great Union Day (the country’s national holiday) which commemorates the achievement of a long unification process. The date marks the unification of Transylvania, Bessarabia, and Bukovina with the Romanian Kingdom in 1918. The creation of a Romanian nation state has occurred in stages between the 19th and early 20th centuries but the Great Union Day (1st December 1918) marks the climax in the formation process of the modern Romanian national state.
Councillor Judith Blake, Leader of the Council, together with the Romanian Honorary Consul, Anne Marie Visoianu-Kanatas hosted around 150 guests in the Civic Hall, many of whom were Romanians who have made Leeds their home. During his speech, the Ambassador praised Leeds for its open and welcoming attitude to different communities.
The celebrations included the cutting of a cake made specially to mark 100 years of Romania and performances by traditional Romanian musicians.
