Climate change is one the greatest challenges facing humanity. Culture can be a powerful resource in addressing climate change and many cultural organisations are rising to the challenge to produce work on environmental themes, raise awareness with audiences and
reduce the environmental impact of their own activities.
Building on the long-term city partnership between Leeds and Lille, cultural organisations from both cities have been working together on a project to exchange best practice around the topic of cultural sustainability. Funded through the British Embassy in Paris, the Sustainable Culture in Leeds and Lille (SCILL) project provides an opportunity for a range of cultural organisations to explore different aspects of sustainable culture, exchange ideas with peers and importantly build new cross-border relationships.
Through online meetings and two study visits, the SCILL project has collated examples of cultural sustainability best practice taking place in Lille and Leeds, involving three key types of cultural organisations: museums & galleries, local government culture services and large
scale events and festivals.
If you would like to find out more about the SCILL project or one of the examples of best practice then please get in touch with us at international.relations@leeds.gov.uk
You can download a great booklet we produced about the project, available in English or French.
